Child Benefits in Poland Explained Simply
Poland's child benefit programme is one of the most significant government transfers to families with children. If you are a parent or carer living in Poland, this guide explains what the programme is, who qualifies, and how to access it.
What Is the 800+ Programme?
The 800+ programme is a universal child benefit paid by the Polish government to families with dependent children. It was launched in 2016 as the "500+" programme, paying 500 PLN per child per month. On 1 January 2024, the amount was increased to 800 PLN per child per month.
The benefit is paid for each child under the age of 18 in the household, regardless of family income.
Key Facts
- Amount: 800 PLN per child per month (since January 2024)
- Age limit: Children up to their 18th birthday
- Income test: None — the benefit is universal since 2019
- Payment method: Monthly transfer to a registered bank account
- Administration: Managed by ZUS (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych — Social Insurance Institution)
Who Is Eligible?
To receive 800+, you generally need to:
- Be the parent, stepparent, or legal guardian of a child under 18
- Have the child residing with you in Poland
- Have a PESEL number (Polish national ID number)
- Provide Polish bank account details for payment
EU/EEA citizens living and working in Poland are generally eligible. Non-EU citizens may qualify under bilateral agreements or specific residence conditions — check with ZUS for your situation.
What the Benefit Is For
Unlike some benefit programmes with restrictions on spending, the 800+ payment is unrestricted. Families may use it for any purpose, including food, clothing, childcare, school materials, or family savings.
Other Related Benefits
Alongside 800+, Polish families may be eligible for other programmes:
- Dobry Start (Good Start): a one-time annual payment of 300 PLN per school-age child to help with the cost of the school year (separate application required, deadline usually July/August)
- "Rodzina 500+" supplements: for families with children with disabilities or specific needs — additional amounts may apply
- Local MOPS/GOPS support: local social welfare centres offer additional targeted help for families in financial need
