Documents Needed for Child Benefit Claims in 2026

Each country's child benefit system requires different supporting documents. Here is a country-by-country guide to what you need before you apply.

USA: Child Tax Credit Documents

The Child Tax Credit is claimed on your federal income tax return (Form 1040), not through a separate application. You will need:

Essential Documents

  • Social Security Numbers — for yourself, your spouse (if filing jointly), and every qualifying child. This is a hard requirement; the claim will be denied without a valid SSN for each child.
  • Proof of income — W-2 forms, 1099s, or other income statements showing your annual earned income
  • Proof of residency (if audited) — school records, medical records, or other documents showing the child lived with you for more than half the year
  • Form 8332 — if you are the noncustodial parent claiming the credit by agreement with the custodial parent

What You Do Not Need

You do not need to submit physical documents with your tax return. Documentation is retained in case of an IRS inquiry or audit.

UK: Child Benefit Claim Documents

Child Benefit is claimed through HMRC using form CH2 (paper) or online via the HMRC app or website. You will need:

Essential Documents

  • Child's birth certificate or adoption certificate — the primary document proving the child's age and your relationship
  • Your National Insurance number — required to link the claim to your tax record
  • Bank account details — for payment of the benefit
  • Proof of address (sometimes requested) — utility bill, council tax statement, or similar

For Children Born Abroad

  • Foreign birth certificate with certified English translation
  • Entry clearance or visa documentation showing the child's right to be in the UK
  • Proof of your own settled or pre-settled status if applicable

High Income (HICBC)

If you or your partner earns over £60,000, you still claim Child Benefit normally. You then register for and complete a Self Assessment tax return each year to declare and pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge.

Canada: Canada Child Benefit Documents

CCB is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency. You apply using Form RC66 (Canada Child Benefits Application) or online through CRA My Account.

Essential Documents

  • Tax returns — CCB is calculated from your and your spouse's most recent filed tax returns. Without a filed return, CRA cannot calculate your entitlement.
  • Proof of birth — provincial birth certificate for children born in Canada. For children born abroad: foreign birth certificate plus citizenship or immigration documents
  • Social Insurance Number (SIN) — for you, your spouse, and children born outside Canada (Canadian-born children are identified by provincial registration)
  • Proof of custody (if applicable) — court order or signed agreement if custody is shared or disputed

For Newcomers to Canada

If you recently became a resident, you must also submit documentation confirming your residency status (permanent resident card, work permit, refugee status documentation). Use Form RC66SCH (Status in Canada / Statement of Income) alongside RC66.

Australia: Family Tax Benefit Documents

FTB is claimed through Services Australia (Centrelink) via myGov. You will need:

Essential Documents

  • myGov account — all FTB claims are processed through myGov linked to Centrelink
  • Tax File Number (TFN) — for you and your partner, to allow income verification against ATO records
  • Proof of birth — Australian birth certificate or, for children born abroad, a foreign birth certificate with translation if not in English
  • Medicare card — confirms Australian residency and links health records
  • Bank account details — for Centrelink payments

Income Documentation

FTB is income-tested. When you claim, you provide an estimate of your annual family income. At the end of the financial year, this is reconciled against your tax return lodged with the ATO. Keep payslips and income statements organised throughout the year.

For New Residents

New Australian permanent residents applying for FTB need their visa grant notice, passport, and evidence of settling in Australia (lease agreement, utility connection). A waiting period may apply depending on visa class.

General Advice for All Countries

Keep digital copies of all documents used in your claim. Government systems can occasionally lose records, and having your own copies means you can quickly resubmit if required. Store copies securely — either encrypted in cloud storage or in a locked physical folder at home.
