How to Estimate Family Benefit Payments in 2026

Estimating what your family could receive from government child support programs is straightforward once you know the rules for your country. Here is a step-by-step guide for families in the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia.

USA: Estimating the Child Tax Credit

Step 1 — Count qualifying children

Each child must be:

  • Under 17 on December 31, 2026
  • A US citizen or resident
  • Your dependent with a valid Social Security Number

Step 2 — Calculate your base credit

Multiply the number of qualifying children by $2,200 (2025 tax year, One Big Beautiful Bill). A family with two qualifying children has a base credit of $4,400.

Step 3 — Apply the phase-out if needed

If your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) exceeds $200,000 (single) or $400,000 (married filing jointly):

  • Subtract the threshold from your MAGI
  • Round up to the nearest $1,000
  • Multiply by $50 × number of children
  • Subtract this from your base credit

Example: Married couple, 2 children, MAGI $405,000

  • Excess: $5,000 → rounded to $5,000 → 5 × $50 × 2 = $500 reduction
  • Adjusted credit: $4,400 − $500 = $3,900

Step 4 — Determine refundable vs. non-refundable portions

  • Non-refundable: $500 per child (reduces your tax bill, excess is lost)
  • Refundable (ACTC): Up to $1,700 per child = 15% of earned income above $2,500

Example: 1 child, $40,000 earned income, $800 tax liability

  • ACTC: 15% × $37,500 = $5,625 → capped at $1,700
  • Non-refundable portion: $500 → applies against $800 tax → $500 used, tax drops to $300
  • Total benefit: $500 (tax reduction) + $1,700 (refund) = $2,200

UK: Estimating Child Benefit

2026/27 Weekly Rates (from April 2026)

ChildWeekly RateAnnual Amount
First child£27.05£1,406.60
Each additional child£17.90£930.80

A family with three children receives: £1,406.60 + £930.80 + £930.80 = £3,268.20 per year

High Income Child Benefit Charge

If your individual income exceeds £60,000, calculate the HICBC:

  1. Subtract £60,000 from your income
  2. Divide by £200
  3. Multiply by 1% of your annual Child Benefit amount

At £80,000 or above, the full benefit is clawed back (100%). However, you should still claim — it protects your National Insurance credits.
